In the past, and still in some dental practices today, silver amalgam materials have been used to fill areas of tooth decay. Unfortunately, continued studies and research show that this material, made of approximately 50% mercury, harms the human body. These fillings also tend to expand and contract, leaving the natural tooth structure susceptible to bacteria entering inside, resulting in an infection.
Instead, we encourage patients to consider tooth-colored fillings made from composite resin, which is a material that closely mimics the appearance of one’s natural tooth enamel while filling the area and sealing it properly to reduce the risk of infections.
