Dentures and dental implants are two popular tooth replacement options in restorative dentistry. However, there are several things to consider when determining which suits you best. Are dentures cheaper than implants? Which solution lasts longer? How do I know which restoration is appropriate for my needs? Drs. Benjamin J. Seaton and Jason Bendas at Artistry in Smiles can discuss these questions during your consultation appointment and initial evaluation.

Can dentures be cheaper than implants?

There are a few factors to consider when determining if dentures for tooth replacement are cheaper than dental implants. Here are some things to think about and discuss with your dentist to determine the most affordable solution for you:

  • Dental insurance benefits. If you have dental insurance, you may have benefits available to you that make one or the other less costly for you. Our front office team can talk to your dental insurance to find out what coverage you have and if more benefits can be applied to one solution over another
  • Longevity of the restoration. Dental implants, when cared for properly over time, can last a lifetime, though the restoration over the abutment may need to be replaced occasionally. Dentures will often need to be adjusted and remade, especially when changes to the smile occur, such as bone loss
  • Maintenance. Both solutions require patients to visit the team at Artistry in Smiles regularly to evaluate the smile’s health and the restoration’s fit and function. Dental implants require less care and attention than dentures but will be completely affected if patients develop periodontal disease with bone loss
  • Preparation. Dental implants sometimes require preparatory services before they can be placed, especially in patients who do not have enough bone to support the implant. These patients may require bone grafting to build up the jawbone to prepare it for dental implant placement. There is no preparation for dentures in most cases, eliminating this extra cost
